  - The instruction decoder in arch/x86/kvm/emulate.c in     the KVM subsystem in the Linux kernel before 3.18-rc2     does not properly handle invalid instructions, which     allows guest OS users to cause a denial of service     (NULL pointer dereference and host OS crash) via a     crafted application that triggers (1) an improperly     fetched instruction or (2) an instruction that occupies     too many bytes.   - An information leak flaw was found in the way the Linux     kernel's ISO9660 file system implementation accessed     data on an ISO9660 image with RockRidge Extension     Reference (ER) records.   - An information leak flaw was found in the way the Linux     kernel's Virtual Dynamic Shared Object (vDSO)     implementation performed address randomization. A     local, unprivileged user could use this flaw to leak     kernel memory addresses to user-space.(CVE-2014-9585)

* With an older Mellanox Connect-IB (mlx4) driver present in the MRG Realtime kernel, a race condition could occur that would cause a loss of connection. The mlx4 driver was updated, resolving the race condition and allowing proper connectivity. (BZ#1182246)

* The MRG Realtime kernel did not contain the appropriate code to resume after a device failed, causing the volume status after a repair to not be properly updated. A 'refresh needed' was still listed in the 'lvs' output after executing the 'lvchange --refresh' command. A patch was added that adds the ability to correctly restore a transiently failed device upon resume. (BZ#1159803)

* The sosreport executable would hang when reading /proc/net/rpc/use-gss-proxy because of faulty wait_queue logic in the proc handler. This wait_queue logic was removed from the proc handler, allowing the reads to correctly return the current state. (BZ#1169900)

  - An issue was discovered in can_can_gw_rcv in     net/can/gw.c in the Linux kernel through 4.19.13. The     CAN frame modification rules allow bitwise logical     operations that can be also applied to the can_dlc     field.   - A use-after-free flaw was discovered in the Linux     kernel's tty subsystem, which allows for the disclosure     of uncontrolled memory location and possible kernel     panic. The information leak is caused by a race     condition when attempting to set and read the tty line     discipline. A local attacker could use the TIOCSETD     (via tty_set_ldisc ) to switch to a new line discipline     a concurrent call to a TIOCGETD ioctl performing a read     on a given tty could then access previously allocated     memory.   - A flaw was found in the way the Linux kernel handled     IRET faults during the processing of NMIs. An     unprivileged, local user could use this flaw to crash     the system or, potentially (although highly unlikely),     escalate their privileges on the     system.(CVE-2015-5157i1/4%0

  - drivers/media/media-device.c in the Linux kernel before     3.11, as used in Android before 2016-08-05 on Nexus 5     and 7 (2013) devices, does not properly initialize     certain data structures, which allows local users to     obtain sensitive information via a crafted application,     aka Android internal bug 28750150 and Qualcomm internal     bug CR570757, a different vulnerability than     CVE-2014-1739.(CVE-2014-9895i1/4%0

  - A use-after-free vulnerability in sys_ioprio_get() was     found due to get_task_ioprio() accessing the     task-i1/4zio_context without holding the task lock and     could potentially race with exit_io_context(), leading     to a use-after-free.(CVE-2016-7911i1/4%0

  - A flaw was found in the Linux kernel which is related     to the user namespace lazily unmounting file systems.
    The fs_pin struct has two members (m_list and s_list)     which are usually initialized on use in the     pin_insert_group function. However, these members might     go unmodified in this case, the system panics when it     attempts to destroy or free them. This flaw could be     used to launch a denial-of-service     attack.(CVE-2015-4178i1/4%0

  - A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's implementation     of raw_sendmsg allowing a local attacker to panic the     kernel or possibly leak kernel addresses. A local     attacker, with the privilege of creating raw sockets,     can abuse a possible race condition when setting the     socket option to allow the kernel to automatically     create ip header values and thus potentially escalate     their privileges.(CVE-2017-17712i1/4%0

  - A flaw was discovered in the F2FS filesystem code in     fs/f2fs/super.c in the Linux kernel. A denial of     service, due to an out-of-bounds memory access, can     occur upon encountering an abnormal bitmap size when     mounting a crafted f2fs image.(CVE-2018-13096i1/4%0

  - A NULL pointer dereference flaw was found in the way     the Linux kernel's madvise MADV_WILLNEED functionality     handled page table locking. A local, unprivileged user     could use this flaw to crash the     system.(CVE-2014-8173i1/4%0

  - An out-of-bounds heap memory access leading to a Denial     of Service, heap disclosure, or further impact was     found in setsockopt(). The function call is normally     restricted to root, however some processes with     cap_sys_admin may also be able to trigger this flaw in     privileged container environments.(CVE-2016-4998i1/4%0

Note that Tenable Network Security has extracted the preceding description block directly from the EulerOS security advisory. Tenable has attempted to automatically clean and format it as much as possible without introducing additional issues.

The Linux kernel was updated to fix various bugs and security issues.

Following security issues were fixed :

  - CVE-2014-8173: A NULL pointer dereference flaw was found     in the way the Linux kernels madvise MADV_WILLNEED     functionality handled page table locking. A local,     unprivileged user could have used this flaw to crash the     system.

  - CVE-2015-1593: A integer overflow reduced the     effectiveness of the stack randomization on 64-bit     systems.

  - CVE-2014-7822: A flaw was found in the way the Linux     kernels splice() system call validated its parameters.
    On certain file systems, a local, unprivileged user     could have used this flaw to write past the maximum file     size, and thus crash the system.

  - CVE-2014-9419: The __switch_to function in     arch/x86/kernel/process_64.c in the Linux kernel did not     ensure that Thread Local Storage (TLS) descriptors are     loaded before proceeding with other steps, which made it     easier for local users to bypass the ASLR protection     mechanism via a crafted application that reads a TLS     base address.

  - CVE-2014-8134: The paravirt_ops_setup function in     arch/x86/kernel/kvm.c in the Linux kernel used an     improper paravirt_enabled setting for KVM guest kernels,     which made it easier for guest OS users to bypass the     ASLR protection mechanism via a crafted application that     reads a 16-bit value.

  - CVE-2014-8160:
    net/netfilter/nf_conntrack_proto_generic.c in the Linux     kernel generated incorrect conntrack entries during     handling of certain iptables rule sets for the SCTP,     DCCP, GRE, and UDP-Lite protocols, which allowed remote     attackers to bypass intended access restrictions via     packets with disallowed port numbers.

  - CVE-2014-9529: Race condition in the key_gc_unused_keys     function in security/keys/gc.c in the Linux kernel     allowed local users to cause a denial of service (memory     corruption or panic) or possibly have unspecified other     impact via keyctl commands that trigger access to a key     structure member during garbage collection of a key.

  - CVE-2014-8559: The d_walk function in fs/dcache.c in the     Linux kernel through did not properly maintain the     semantics of rename_lock, which allowed local users to     cause a denial of service (deadlock and system hang) via     a crafted application.

  - CVE-2014-9420: The rock_continue function in     fs/isofs/rock.c in the Linux kernel did not restrict the     number of Rock Ridge continuation entries, which allowed     local users to cause a denial of service (infinite loop,     and system crash or hang) via a crafted iso9660 image.

  - CVE-2014-9584: The parse_rock_ridge_inode_internal     function in fs/isofs/rock.c in the Linux kernel did not     validate a length value in the Extensions Reference (ER)     System Use Field, which allowed local users to obtain     sensitive information from kernel memory via a crafted     iso9660 image.

  - CVE-2014-9585: The vdso_addr function in     arch/x86/vdso/vma.c in the Linux kernel did not properly     choose memory locations for the vDSO area, which made it     easier for local users to bypass the ASLR protection     mechanism by guessing a location at the end of a PMD.

  - HID: usbhid: add always-poll quirk (bnc#920901).

  - storvsc: ring buffer failures may result in I/O freeze     (bnc#914175).

  - mm, vmscan: prevent kswapd livelock due to     pfmemalloc-throttled process being killed (VM     Functionality bnc#910150).

  - Input: evdev - fix EVIOCG(type) ioctl (bnc#904899).

  - mnt: Implicitly add MNT_NODEV on remount when it was     implicitly added by mount (bsc#907988).

  - DocBook: Do not exceed argument list limit.

  - DocBook: Make mandocs parallel-safe.

  - mm: free compound page with correct order (bnc#913695).

  - udf: Check component length before reading it.

  - udf: Check path length when reading symlink.

  - udf: Verify symlink size before loading it.

  - udf: Verify i_size when loading inode.

  - xfs: remote attribute overwrite causes transaction     overrun.

The remote Oracle Linux 6 / 7 host has packages installed that are affected by multiple vulnerabilities as referenced in the ELSA-2015-3012 advisory.

  - The Crypto API in the Linux kernel before 3.18.5 allows local users to load arbitrary kernel modules via a     bind system call for an AF_ALG socket with a module name in the salg_name field, a different vulnerability     than CVE-2014-9644. (CVE-2013-7421)

  - The Crypto API in the Linux kernel before 3.18.5 allows local users to load arbitrary kernel modules via a     bind system call for an AF_ALG socket with a parenthesized module template expression in the salg_name     field, as demonstrated by the vfat(aes) expression, a different vulnerability than CVE-2013-7421.
    (CVE-2014-9644)

  - The WRMSR processing functionality in the KVM subsystem in the Linux kernel through 3.17.2 does not     properly handle the writing of a non-canonical address to a model-specific register, which allows guest OS     users to cause a denial of service (host OS crash) by leveraging guest OS privileges, related to the     wrmsr_interception function in arch/x86/kvm/svm.c and the handle_wrmsr function in arch/x86/kvm/vmx.c.
    (CVE-2014-3610)

  - The do_umount function in fs/namespace.c in the Linux kernel through 3.17 does not require the     CAP_SYS_ADMIN capability for do_remount_sb calls that change the root filesystem to read-only, which     allows local users to cause a denial of service (loss of writability) by making certain unshare system     calls, clearing the / MNT_LOCKED flag, and making an MNT_FORCE umount system call. (CVE-2014-7975)

  - The paravirt_ops_setup function in arch/x86/kernel/kvm.c in the Linux kernel through 3.18 uses an improper     paravirt_enabled setting for KVM guest kernels, which makes it easier for guest OS users to bypass the     ASLR protection mechanism via a crafted application that reads a 16-bit value.   - arch/x86/kernel/tls.c in the Thread Local Storage (TLS) implementation in the Linux kernel through 3.18.1     allows local users to bypass the espfix protection mechanism, and consequently makes it easier for local     users to bypass the ASLR protection mechanism, via a crafted application that makes a set_thread_area     system call and later reads a 16-bit value. (CVE-2014-8133)

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Updated kernel packages that fix multiple security issues, address several hundred bugs, and add numerous enhancements are now available as part of the ongoing support and maintenance of Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 7. This is the first regular update.

Red Hat Product Security has rated this update as having Important security impact. Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) base scores, which give detailed severity ratings, are available for each vulnerability from the CVE links in the References section.

The kernel packages contain the Linux kernel, the core of any Linux operating system.

* A flaw was found in the way the Linux kernel's XFS file system handled replacing of remote attributes under certain conditions. A local user with access to XFS file system mount could potentially use this flaw to escalate their privileges on the system. (CVE-2015-0274, Important)

* It was found that the Linux kernel's KVM implementation did not ensure that the host CR4 control register value remained unchanged across VM entries on the same virtual CPU. A local, unprivileged user could use this flaw to cause denial of service on the system.
(CVE-2014-3690, Moderate)

* A flaw was found in the way Linux kernel's Transparent Huge Pages (THP) implementation handled non-huge page migration. A local, unprivileged user could use this flaw to crash the kernel by migrating transparent hugepages. (CVE-2014-3940, Moderate)

* An out-of-bounds memory access flaw was found in the syscall tracing functionality of the Linux kernel's perf subsystem. A local, unprivileged user could use this flaw to crash the system.
(CVE-2014-7825, Moderate)

* An out-of-bounds memory access flaw was found in the syscall tracing functionality of the Linux kernel's ftrace subsystem. On a system with ftrace syscall tracing enabled, a local, unprivileged user could use this flaw to crash the system, or escalate their privileges.
(CVE-2014-7826, Moderate)

* A race condition flaw was found in the Linux kernel's ext4 file system implementation that allowed a local, unprivileged user to crash the system by simultaneously writing to a file and toggling the O_DIRECT flag using fcntl(F_SETFL) on that file. (CVE-2014-8086, Moderate)

* A flaw was found in the way the Linux kernel's netfilter subsystem handled generic protocol tracking. As demonstrated in the Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) case, a remote attacker could use this flaw to bypass intended iptables rule restrictions when the associated connection tracking module was not loaded on the system.

* It was found that due to excessive files_lock locking, a soft lockup could be triggered in the Linux kernel when performing asynchronous I/O operations. A local, unprivileged user could use this flaw to crash the system. (CVE-2014-8172, Moderate)

* A NULL pointer dereference flaw was found in the way the Linux kernel's madvise MADV_WILLNEED functionality handled page table locking. A local, unprivileged user could use this flaw to crash the system. (CVE-2014-8173, Moderate)

* An information leak flaw was found in the Linux kernel's IEEE 802.11 wireless networking implementation. When software encryption was used, a remote attacker could use this flaw to leak up to 8 bytes of plaintext. (CVE-2014-8709, Low)

* A stack-based buffer overflow flaw was found in the TechnoTrend/Hauppauge DEC USB device driver. A local user with write access to the corresponding device could use this flaw to crash the kernel or, potentially, elevate their privileges on the system.
